THE STARTING 11: Reasons Toronto fans left the MLS Cup early

Extra Time is just about to kick-off...

Poor, poor Toronto FC supporters. As if we don't have to put up with enough from our Goat-god worshipping, panda-eating, Cochrane-promoting ownership... today we're getting it in the ear from our MLS supporter rivals from around the continent!. Our fabled and over-marketed "BMO Field atmosphere" didn't live up to its own hype during last night's Cup Final with a mixture of apathetic crowds, empty seats and a mass exodus well before the 90th minute. Locally we know that supporters have been used and abused by ML$E and that had much to do with the lacklustre turn-out (so enough of your lip North America... you don't know our pain! Single tear) but there were still other reasons Torontonians headed for the exits early...

11. They stopped selling beer in the 75th minute... duh!

10. Had tickets for the 11PM showing of Harry Potter

9. Insulted that away supporters didn't know "The Dichio Song"

8. Thought there was a spontaneous 83rd minute walk-out to protest against ML$E

7. Stood up to get on TSN2's cameras so I could seen by dozens across Canada

6. Was sure that I bought tickets for Avalanche vs. Stars

5. I came. I gave Jeff Cunningham the finger. I left.

4. Only bought tickets to hear Garber's halftime interview

3. Chip Buttys only have a 68 minute shelf-life

2. No buffet car on the 11PM GO Train

1. Could no longer feel own ass

Buffet Car is in carriage 5. Try the salmon... exquisite!

  1. I was there until the 120th minute, and don't blame those who had to leave. I am glad that I stayed to see the winner, but I had to walk 3 km at 2am in Scarborough because of the poor sunday service at night on the TTC.

  2. What ever happened to Saturday afternoon/evening games?

Its not like they would get a more obscure TV deal.

  3. I left at normal time… they just started the MLS Cup Game an hour later than normal.
I mean what's up with the 8:30 p.m. start time??!!

  4. This is the league's fault - stupid day/time to put the match. For those of us with kids at the game and a long drive back home, leaving the stadium at 11:30pm with school the next day was not exactly ideal.

  5. I wonder how much American planning is involved in these games.

You know the type....you can watch American Football's Superbowl on Sunday night. The Grey Cup is now held on Sundays. Sunday is whoo hooo sports day. What ever happened to Saturday evening championship events?

  6. I stayed to the end. Got to my car at 12:15am -drove home to Acton - home by 1:15am
Sure folks were streaming out post 90 minutes. It was a cup final, but it was Colorado - Dallas and their fans in the north end corners were as entertaining as watching Don Garber dance. Lesson learned - BMO atmosphere suffers when Toronto not playing and two western teams are in town.

  7. 12. David Farreria: "Christ! I was frozen today!"

PS: I got home at 1am that night. I feel your pain.

  8. Correction, they stopped selling beer at the 65th minute.

Let's be fair, the park was empty from the get go. There is no way the attendance came even CLOSE to a sell-out crowd which was announced. If there was actually 18,000 through the gates, I'd be baffled!!!

  9. Sunday night games are just plain stupid fro a business point of view. For the viewership they received on national/international TV, it may have been better not to have had it televised leaving those who could not watch to wonder. But heck, they obviously don't have that level of boldness or creativity in MLS HQ.
