Speaking to financial media outlet Forbes, MLS supremo Don Garber said that Montreal should have the 19th spot in the league by the 2011 season.No matter what your feelings are about Montreal, Quebec, The Impact, Charles De Gaulle, mimes, body hair... this news is fantastic for Planet TFC and it's supporters. The excitement that is often palpable at BMO Field will be downright fiery when we have a true rival (no offence Columbus, you know you feel the same) playing in a true regional derby. The two cities are already the best of rivals in other sports, politics, language, culture, looks, smell, sausages etc. and football will be an amazing catalyst.
Hopefully this is more than a rumour and Joey Saputo won't put his foot in his mouth once again, pissing off MLS. Let's also hope that the Montreal club will see le light and ouvre le porte for a new name. Impact is a roller hockey name which unlike Whitecaps, Sounders and Timbers has no history or relevance. Bienvenue FC Olympique Montreal? Mais oui!

fantastique! see even we English can speak a bit of French. Sad as I normally find no reason for using it as a language given that I wouldn't go to France if you paid me. Why I hear you cry it is only 26 miles (note not Km's) across the Channel, well it stinks, is full of Euros and french people. The Eiffel Tower looks like an electric pylon and they eat frogs legs and snails! On the occasions that I have been required to converse with a foreigner (Canada not included, at least the English speaking parts) I find speaking slowly and shouting gets the message across.
ReplyDeleteI suspose that Montreal will follow all the other self opinioned clubs and proclaim themselves 'Mont Réal' with delusions of grandure. I can't wait to see the two clubs meet in a local derby just as we have here in the UK. Real battles between mighty giants and an atmosphere to boot. I do hope they hand out commerative seat pads again, biy can those things fly.
